Denby Summary:
Denby turns up looking much worse for wear and confesses that he can't remember the events of the night before; did Diane come back to the motel with him or not? Judging from her behaviour he realises pretty quickly that she didn't and that on the night in question he was considerably less than a perfect gentleman.
He then reveals the more 'important' reason for his visit; after getting drunk last night he wasn't guarding as well as he should have been and Don got away. Needless to say, if his bosses get wind of this he's in big trouble, but he tells Diane that it's also in Kirkendall's interest to let him know if Don contacts her.
Kirkendall meets up with Don at Diane's apartment - her own is being watched - gives him some money, and tells him that if he contacts her again she'll tell the police where to find him. As he leaves he pockets Bobbi's ring, which is on the side.
Denby contacts Diane - after seeing someone washing out the inside of a van he became suspicious and started searching trash bins, where he found the body. Various body parts are missing but he's pretty sure it's Don, even though the only personal item he found on the body was a ring which he didn't notice Don wearing before. Seeing Bobbi's ring in Denby's hand, Diane freaks and demands it back, telling him that it is Don's body.

Denby Quotes:
"Hi."
***
"Look at this Rudy. Look what I gave up for this mess! Diane, Diane I'm sorry. Honey-"
Observations:
* "Diane, honey!" I love how presumptious Denby is! Sure, if I was Diane and he was doing that to me it would probably drive me crazy, but thankfully he's a television character and I can love him for it.
* He did actually say in this episode "I need help." We all know that this is in relation to finding Don, but I can't help but wonder if he was also asking for more than that...I'm not saying he is, just pondering. It's something I do a lot.
* Very nice the way Denby refused to meet her gaze at all in that first scene until after he apologised, and when it was clear she didn't want to hear it he just walked away. Very nice.
* Scott looked terrible! The worst I've ever seen him look. Very effective, and I could genuinely believe that he had a hangover.
* Can I make a reference to the "Diane, honey!" part again?
* To be honest I was a little disappointed at first by how little he was in the episode. I'm willing to admit that I was thoroughly spoiled by 'These Shoots Are Made For Joaquin'. As with this episode he was only in two scenes, but his second scene in that episode was much longer (about six minutes), and an absolute corker of a scene. That said, it shouldn't belittle his scenes in this episode.
* Snicker... "You're a good influence. Latest I've seen Denby upright."...snicker.
* Here's a thought; we know that Denby didn't want Russo to know about the Dominicans, and Denby's excuse is that "...these Dominicans are going away anyhow." Let's postulate, shall we? Is there any other reason why he might not want Russo to know the Dominicans were involved? Is he even deeper involved than we intially thought?
Or...
Did he just not want him to know for his own convenience, because he didn't want Russo to know it was probably Don? If so, was the reference to the cancellation of a non-existent date with Diane and the use of the endearment part of him trying to cover his ass to show that he wasn't watching anyone - and there probably was some degree of that to his 'performance' - but he was playing it more over the top just for the hell of it because either a) he really likes her, or b) he likes watching her squirm?
Both? Neither?
Wow. I butchered just about every aspect of structure in the English language there. I'm proud of myself.
* Actually... "You're a good influence. Latest I've seen Denby upright." If this is true, does this mean that Denby is actually trying to make some kind of effort to stop drinking? Is Diane the reason?
* There are so many ways his character could go or be. Would it ruin it for me to discover exactly what the truth is about him? Whether he is just screwed up or under cover?
Possibly. But I'll have fun on the way. How 'bout you?

"Uh hu."
"I need some help."
"A lot."
"I don't remember what happened last night."
"Is that right? You were an asshole."
"Did you...come to the motel with me?"
"Is this another sick game?"
"Got a black out."
"'Cause I got what I needed to know from you."
"He's in the wind."
"What are you talking about?"
"Your partners ex-husband is in the wind."
"Come here, Denby."
"I had watch on him last night at the motel. Woke up like 5 o'clock on the morning and he was gone. Him loose...can screw your partner up bad."
"Yeah. Otherwise I'd sure like to spend some time thinking about you blowing your career."
"No way he doesn't reach out to her?"
"That's you locking in on how a prick'll behave, right Denby?"
"Can I just say...I don't get this guy back, I'm looking at losing my job. Obviously I don't have to ask how you and me hit if off, but it's in your girlfriends interest letting me know when he reaches out."
"If I decide that's true, I know how to get in touch."
"For what it's worth I apologise."
"Nothing. Guess how much that's worth."
"Honey? Are you drunk?"
"I wish I was drunk."
"Why'd you page me?"
"This has gotta be your partners ex. Diane Russell from the 15th; Rudy Russo."
"How you doing?"
"Better than this guy."
"Are you at least gonna get me off the hot seat for standing her up?"
"Denby discovered our mystery man. Hands and feet cut off, head cut off so we can't check dental records, best this guy gives me for a lead is two unidentified male Hispanics beating feet down the street out there."
"Excuse me for my first curiousity being 'what mischief might the unidentified male Hispanics be up to in the alley'?"
"Thanks."
"You're a good influence. Latest I've seen Denby upright."
"What am I doing here Denby?"
"I give up on your partners place like two hours ago, start sitting on one of the Dominicans her ex-husbands mulled for like two blocks from here. One of his crews outside washing down the inside of a van. I start checking some dumpsters, I find that."
"You didn't tell your buddy Russo about sitting on the Dominicans place?"
"Hey these Dominicans are going away anyhow. If that body is your partners ex, my life's a lot simpler if he's never identified. The only thing...is this his ring do you know?"
"You found that on the body?"
"Some kind of interlocked hearts on the inside. I mean do you know if it's his? 'Cause he didn't have a ring when I was guarding him."
"I want that."
"You wanna give it to your partner?"
"Yeah."
"You understand about my life being simpler?"
"Give me the ring Denby."
"So it is his ring."
"Yeah. It's his."
- Denby returns with an urge he can't control. -
